# Gold Price Today: XAUUSD Tests $4,000 After US Inflation Data

October 30, 2026 | Pre-US-data edition Price snapshot: 07:40 UTC / 1:10 p.m. IST | Prices in US dollars per troy ounce

Gold price today remains centred on the $4,000 threshold as investors assess persistent US inflation, resilient growth and the next test from employment costs.

Reuters reported spot gold at $3,982.85, down 0.9%, at 07:40 UTC on October 30. December US gold futures were $3,992.50, down 1%. These are timestamped observations for different instruments, not an official XAUUSD daily close or a continuously updating quote.

Our assessment is cautious: the fundamental backdrop remains challenging for gold, but the next directional move needs confirmation from prices, Treasury yields and the dollar. A temporary move above or below a round number is insufficient to establish a durable trend.

What the latest US inflation report actually showed

The September Personal Income and Outlays report was released on Thursday, October 29. It is already known information entering Friday's session.

September measureReported result
Headline PCE inflation, month over month0.5%
Headline PCE inflation, year over year3.6%
Core PCE inflation, month over month0.3%
Core PCE inflation, year over year3.1%
Personal income, monthly change0.2%
Consumer spending in current dollars, monthly change0.5%
Inflation-adjusted consumer spending, monthly changeLess than 0.1%

Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis. Core PCE excludes food and energy; real spending adjusts for price changes.

The difference between nominal and real spending matters. Higher spending in dollars can reflect higher prices without a comparable increase in the quantity of goods and services purchased.

Our interpretation is that the report leaves the Fed facing persistent price pressure alongside a softer monthly real-spending picture. That combination complicates the case for rapid policy easing.

The numbers should not automatically be labelled an inflation “surprise.” Trading Economics listed 0.5% headline monthly PCE and 0.3% core monthly PCE as the consensus estimates, matching the published results. A firm inflation reading can still influence the outlook even when it meets expectations.

The Fed held rates, but the decision was not unanimous

On October 28, the Federal Reserve maintained its target range at 3.75%–4.00%.

The decision passed 10–2. Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack preferred a 0.25 percentage-point increase. The statement described economic activity as expanding strongly and inflation as elevated.

For gold, an unchanged policy rate does not automatically create a supportive environment. Investors also price the possible direction of future policy.

Our reading is that the two dissents keep the tightening debate relevant. They do not guarantee a later increase, but they make it difficult to interpret the October hold as a clear signal that rate cuts are approaching.

The distinction matters because gold pays no interest. If expected returns on interest-bearing assets rise, holding bullion can become relatively less attractive.

GDP adds another layer to the policy debate

The advance estimate put third-quarter US real GDP growth at 3.4% annualised, compared with 2.2% in the second quarter.

The 3.4% figure is an annualised quarter-to-quarter rate. BEA reported the corresponding non-annualised quarterly increase as 0.8%. The advance estimate remains subject to revision.

Our interpretation is that stronger growth gives the Fed more room to focus on inflation. However, one quarterly release does not determine the next policy decision.

It also helps explain why gold can struggle despite uncertainty elsewhere. An economy that continues expanding can reduce the urgency of easing policy, even when some individual indicators weaken.

For today's session, the relevant question is whether incoming wage-cost data reinforce that combination of resilience and persistent inflation.

Why inflation and geopolitical risk can pressure gold

Gold's reputation as an inflation hedge does not mean every inflationary development produces an immediate rally.

There are competing channels. Greater uncertainty can encourage defensive demand for bullion. At the same time, higher inflation can support expectations of tighter monetary policy, potentially raising the opportunity cost of holding gold.

Energy prices add to this tension. Reuters identified higher oil prices and supply concerns as part of Friday's inflation backdrop.

Our analysis is to watch which channel dominates in market prices. If oil rises while the dollar and real yields strengthen, gold may struggle. If uncertainty intensifies while real yields fall, the balance could become more supportive.

Real yields are inflation-adjusted bond yields. They should not be confused with nominal Treasury yields or calculated simply by subtracting the latest monthly inflation release from a bond yield.

A dollar move also needs context. A softer dollar can help dollar-priced gold, but that relationship can weaken when positioning, liquidity or demand for cash dominates.

XAUUSD price areas to monitor

These are rounded analytical reference areas derived from recent completed daily observations. They are not guaranteed support, resistance or entry instructions.

Price areaBasisWhat to watch
$3,975–$3,980October 23 and 26 lowsWhether price stabilises around the recent low area or remains below it
$4,000–$4,005Psychological threshold and October 29 lowWhether a recovery can reclaim and hold the area
$4,020–$4,030Recent daily close, low and high referencesWhether buying extends beyond an initial rebound
$4,065–$4,085October 27–29 highsA broader recovery test if nearer areas are regained

Investing.com's historical series recorded lows of $3,975.64 on October 23 and $3,978.15 on October 26. October 29 ranged from $4,005.17 to $4,072.65; October 28 reached $4,082.79.

Our technical interpretation is conditional. Holding above $4,000–$4,005 would be an early improvement, while sustained acceptance above $4,020–$4,030 would provide stronger recovery evidence.

Repeated rejection around those areas, followed by persistent trading below the recent lows, would weaken that recovery case. A brief sweep and reversal would deliver a different message from an extended move below support.

Today's remaining US events

This edition is prepared before the following releases. The figures in the expectation column are forecasts, not results.

Event on October 30UTCISTPre-release reference
Q3 Employment Cost Index12:306:00 p.m.Consensus 0.8% quarterly; previous 0.9%
October Chicago PMI13:457:15 p.m.Consensus 56.1; previous 58.8

The Employment Cost Index release time is confirmed by the BLS calendar. Consensus estimates and the Chicago PMI schedule are from Trading Economics and can change before publication.

The Employment Cost Index tracks employer compensation costs, including wages and benefits. It helps assess labour-cost pressure and differs from the monthly average-hourly-earnings measure.

A stronger-than-expected result could reinforce concern about persistent inflation. For gold, the bearish interpretation would be more convincing if yields and the dollar also rose.

A softer result could provide relief. The supportive interpretation would gain weight if yields fell and XAUUSD retained its recovery after the initial reaction.

Chicago PMI is a regional business survey. It can affect sentiment, but should not be treated as equivalent to the national ISM manufacturing report.

Three possible paths through the session

Gold recovers: Employment costs are softer than expected, yields ease and the dollar loses support. XAUUSD reclaims the nearer recovery areas and holds them on a retest.

Gold remains under pressure: Wage-cost data reinforce inflation concerns, yields stay firm and rebounds struggle to hold. Persistent weakness around the recent low area would strengthen this scenario.

Gold remains volatile within a range: The releases send mixed signals and cross-market reactions diverge. An initial breakout reverses, leaving the market without sustained direction.

These are analytical scenarios rather than trade calls or assigned probabilities. The reaction after the first move matters as much as the headline number.
